For what was one of the most eagerly awaited red carpet appearances, Bollywood style icon Sonam Kapoor fetched mixed reactions from fashion critics on Sunday.
Following the tremendous hype about Sonam Kapoor going to Cannes, it certainly is a disappointment to see India's fashionista fair so poorly at the Cannes red carpet. Check out for yourself.
The 26-year-old actor wore a gothic black tulle gown by Alexander McQueen at the closing ceremony of the 65th Cannes International Film Festival and premiere of the film, Therese Desqueyroux.
From lots of sheer black fabric and intricate embroidery on the gown to the heavy makeup, the look didn’t quite work in favour of Sonam, who had rocked the Cannes red carpet last year, in a stunning white Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown.
“The gown’s lining was distracting. Her shoe choice and hairstyle fell flat,” wrote celebs.gather.com. “Sonam doesn’t quite have enough presence to pull off this dark, mysterious tulle embroidered gown, especially when paired with simple black pumps,” wrote redcarpet-fashionawards.com. “Expectations were so high, especially after last year. We feel disappointed,” posted highheelconfidential.com
The actor, however, managed to save the day with an off shoulder dress by Dolce & Gabbana for the official dinner. The voluminous red velvet dress, paired with beautiful hair accessory, red lips and an updo scored high on the trend-o-meter. “Tad whimsical but completely girly,” wrote Highheelconfidential.

But far from stressed about the verdict of critics, Sonam let her hair down by partying and bonding with Hollywood A-listers such as actors Gemma Arterton, Salma Hayek, Gerard Butler, Robert De Niro and Alec Baldwin at a dinner hosted by Gucci earlier last week.
