The internet has been buzzing with what is said to be the list of 24 movies in the Cannes Film Festival Competition. However, the official announcement of the movies is 15 days away: the list will be revealed on April 19 in Paris.

The Festival’s Delegate General, Thierry Fremaux, termed, in no uncertain terms, the list a lie. "The selection is in my head," Frémaux told the industry website, Deadline. "It's disgusting to play with such a thing. There is a code of conduct for Cannes and it must be respected. Those who don't respect the code will never come back to Cannes." Clearly he was angry.

The 24-strong “lineup”, surprisingly includes the hot probable names like Terrence Malick, David Cronenberg and Paul Thomas Anderson. Here is the complete leaked list:

Apres La Bataille, Yousry Nasrallah
Big House atte, Garrone
The Burial, Terrence Malick
Cosmopolis, David Cronenberg
De Rouille Et D’os, Jacques Audiard
Elefante Bianco, Pablo Trapero
Gebo Et L’ombre, Manoel de Oliveira
Le Grand Soir, Gustave Kervern and Benoit Delépine
Il Est Difficile D’etre Un Dieu, Alexei Guerman
In Another Country, Hong Sangsoo
He Land Of Hope, Sono Sion
Laurence Anyways, Xavier Dolan
A Liar’s Autobiography & The True Story Of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman, Bill Jones, Jeff Simpson and Ben Timlett
Main Dans La Main, Valérie Donzelli
The Master, Paul Thomas Anderson
Mishima (provisional title), Koji Wakamatsu
Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson (confirmed as the opening work)
No, Pablo Larrain
Piazza Fontana, Marco Tullio Giordana
A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence, Roy Andersson
He Place Beyond The Pines, Derek Cianfrance
Provizoriu, Cristian Mungiu
Rhinos Season, Bahman Ghobadi
Stoker, Park Chan-wook

There is something fishy about this so-called list. One, Fremaux, Deputy General Delegate Christian Jeune and others are still watching films, suggesting that the official list can in no way be complete or even near complete. Two, there are some movies in the leaked list that may not be ready for Cannes, which begins on May 16, such as Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master and Terrence Malick's untitled Ben Affleck-Rachel McAdams romance (officially listed as The Burial on the leak). Three, two movies that have been widely predicted will be in Competition --  Walter Salles' On The Road and Michael Haneke's Love  -- do not figure in the leaked list.

This year, Cannes appears to have begun with a controversy; last time, it ended with one, when the Festival declared the legendary Danish director and Cannes favourite, Lars Von Trier, persona non-grata when he told a press conference that he was a Nazi. At Cannes to present his latest work, Melancholia, Von Trier later apologised for his remark. But the Festival  did not relent.
