Great resentment and disappointment was evident among Congress ticket aspirants over the nomination of Vijay Sathi as Congress candidate for the Moga by-election scheduled to be held on February 23.
The leaders included the strong contenders like Darshan Singh Brar, who lost to
Meheshinder Singh from Baghapurana in February 2012 election, Punjab Mahila Congress president Malti Thapar and Vijay Dheer, an advocate and president of district unit of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC).
The supporters of these aspirants also feel that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) as per the recommendation of the six members Pradesh Committee, the decision taken by AICC over nomination of Vijay Sathi, seems to be inching towards serving the Moga assembly seat to the SAD-BJP in a platter.
The Congress workers and supporters of Darshan Singh Brar, Malti Thapar and Vijay Dheer held their meetings respectively on Saturday.
They expressed their resentment and appealed to Captain Amarinder Singh for reconsidering the decision and moreover not to consider the name of Darshan Singh Brar, who is beyond doubt a stronger candidate and can give fight to the ruling SAD-BJP candidate Joginderpal Jain.
Jain after resigning from Congress was inducted into SAD by deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on December 26 and was immediately announced as SAD nominee for the Moga bypoll election.
What is evident from the mood of the Congress supporters is that the Congress nominee might face lukewarm support.
SAD candidate Joginderpal Jain and Sanjha Morcha nominee Ravinder Singh had already started campaigning whereas Congress is yet to start.
Jain is also facing hardships as SAD and BJP activists did not join in campaigning for Jain. On the other hand, Congress would also face great challenge from the Punjab People Party (PPP) as Manpreet Singh Badal refused to withdraw his candidature from the contest in favour of Congress, as per Capt's suggestion.
Congress members close to Vijay Sathi stated that Jagmeet Singh Brar, member AICC and strong supporter of Vijay Sathi Moga have now decided to approach Manpreet Singh Badal to withdraw Sanjha Morcha candidate.
Punjab Mahila Congress president Malti Thapar, whose statement appeared in yesterday's papers considering the present state of affairs of Pradesh Congress, charged Captain Amrinder Singh of playing dirty politics with his own partymen for his vested interest to retain his chair.
Meanwhile, former minister Darshan Singh Brar who was a strong contender for Moga seat refused to get involved in any controversy and preferred to remain silent for the time being but made it clear that he will not oppose the Congress nominee.
