The city began the week with a gruelling train ride as services on both central and western lines were disrupted.
On the western line, a suburban local was derailed at Borivli and services were affected during the morning rush hour. On the central line, services were hit in the
morning towards Kalyan because a dumper broke down on a railway crossing near Diva in Thane. To add to the difficulty, a pantograph of a Turbhe-bound empty rake got entangled in the overhead wires disrupting services on the trans-harbour line (that connects Thane and Vashi).
“If such incidents take place just a day after the mega block meant for maintenance, one wonders what the railway authorities are doing? Why should passengers suffer for railway inefficiency,” said Nilesh Kamtekar, a Borivli resident.
The derailment on the western line — the second in three days — has led to safety concerns, said railway sources. On January 26 too, two coaches of a suburban local had derailed near Churchgate station. “It is generally poor track maintenance that causes such derailments,” said a railway official.
On Monday, a coach of a suburban local was derailed at a railway crossing at 1.28am while it was moving towards a Kandivli car-shed from platform number two at Borivli station. The coach was put back on track after five hours, and services were restored after another two hours. Services from platforms one, two and seven were suspended till then.
About 14 trains were cancelled and many were delayed by 30 to 40 minutes during the morning peak hour, resulting in a rush on platforms and trains.
Meanwhile, central railway (CR) commuters also faced trouble as suburban services on main and trans-harbour lines were hit because of the stalled dumper and faulty overhead equipment respectively. “We had to cancel 8 main line and 22 trans-harbour line suburban services,” said AK Jain, CR spokesperson. The dumper breakdown disrupted all four railway tracks. Services were restored on three lines in 20 minutes, but the slow line towards Kalyan was affected till 10.50am. On the trans-harbour line, services were restored after 7am.
