Neither Modi nor Rahul will be the real stars of the 2014 polls
Rajdeep Sardesai in The game’s wide open (Beyond The Bite, January 25) rightly states that in the era of coalition politics, a leader who knows the art of keeping various partners of an alliance together will win
the 2014 elections. It’s wrong to compare Rahul Gandhi with Narendra Modi. The former has been given charge of the Congress recently. Modi, on the other hand, is a seasoned politician. But he is not popular among the NDA allies. Therefore, the result of the 2014 elections will depend on the UPA and NDA allies rather than Modi or Rahul.

Clear the air on the N-reactor
There are reports that the commissioning of the first Russian-designed Kud-ankulam nuclear reactor has been further delayed because of technical problems. The commissioning has been postponed fortnight after fortnight, without explanation from the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) or Nuclear Power Corporation of India, and with a bland assertion by DAE secretary RK Sinha that “no major issue” lies behind the delays. This lack of transparency has fuelled rumours that there have been leaks and other mishaps at the plant, which have resulted in physical injuries and even death of workers, and a ban on the entry of contract labour. These rumours have caused insecurity and panic among the local people, who have long expressed their apprehensions reg-arding the reactors’ safety, which the project authorities have failed to ass-uage. The authorities have refused to make public the Site Evaluation Report, Safety Analysis Report and the Eme-rgency Preparedness Plan. An immediate, impartial inquiry by independent experts into Kudankulam is an urgent necessity, pending which the reactor shouldn’t be allowed to attain criticality.
