A police team rushed to the spot to find a young woman's body -- dressed only in a pair of black slacks, hands tied with a white plastic wire. Her burnt face was turned sideways to an adjacent wall.
"We rushed the body to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where initial medical examination could only confirm that the cause of her death was strangulation," said a senior police officer investigating the incident.
"Doctors confirmed that her face had been burnt using either petrol or diesel in an attempt to keep whoever discovered her body from being able to ascertain her identity."
Police said scouring the records of women reported missing from seven adjacent states turned out to be fruitless. No one of the victim's description had been reported missing till Thursday.
"The woman might be a resident of an adjacent satellite town and was either murdered there or on her way to the Capital before being dumped at the park," the officer said.
Police said they were yet to ascertain whether or not the victim had been sexually assaulted before being murdered.
"Her body has been preserved at a mortuary and we are trying to ascertain her identity. A post-mortem examination can only be carried out once her identity has been ascertained," the officer added.
