A Delhi court on Monday framed charges against former CWG chief Suresh Kalmadi and nine of his associates with regard to a Rs. 90-crore corruption scam concerning the purchase of Swiss timing devices.

The CBI had chargesheet Kalmadi and his accomplices for "illegally" awarding a contract to install a Timing, Scoring and Results (TSR) system for the 2010 CWG to Swiss Timing at inflated rates, causing a loss of over R90 crore to the exchequer. It charged the accused with cheating, conspiring and causing loss to the exchequer, offences relating to forgery and use of forged documents as genuine, criminal intimidation, destruction of evidence of the IPC, and Section 13(1)(d) read with Section 13(2) (criminal misconduct by public servants) of the PC Act.

Special CBI Judge Ravinder Kaur, after framing the charges, ordered that the evidence be recorded on February 20. The judge also ordered day-to-day proceeding of the trial.

Besides Kalmadi and secretary general Lalit Bhanot, the other accused in the case are OC's former director general VK Verma, former director general (procurement) Surjit Lal, former joint director general (sports) ASV Prasad and former treasurer M Jayachandran. They are no longer associated with the sporting body.
