A middle-aged labourer couple, weaned away from their respective partners and brought together by a shared fondness for alcohol, ended their lives by consuming poison at a west Delhi slum on Wednesday, police said.

Prembai and Jainarayan, both aged around 45, had been on the receiving end of increasing animosity from each other’s family members who disapproved of their relationship.

The couple was found with foaming mouths at a small house at the Bakkarwala JJ Colony slum cluster near Mundka around noon.

“We received a call and a team rushed the couple to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital for medical aid. However, doctors declared them dead,” said an officer.

“Since no suicide note was recovered from their possession, local inquiries revealed that both of them were married to different people but were living-in for several months.”

According to police, the couple’s neighbours claimed that Jainarayan had moved in with Prembai at a small house around six months ago.

Jainarayan’s move had enraged Prembai’s husband who started visiting her in his absence and assaulting her.

On the other hand, the couple’s neighbours told police, Prembai’s children would visit her too and hurl abuses at her.

Initial investigation has revealed that the couple procured some sulphas tablets, consumed an overdose and went to sleep on Tuesday night.

Police said both bodies had been sent for a post-mortem examination.
