The eight-year-old girl whose decapitated body was recovered near home minister Umashankar Gupta’s bungalow in TT Nagar, had been raped before she was murdered, police confirmed on Wednesday.
The girl’s body was found on Monday in some bushes across the road, opposite to the
minister’s house. The severed head had been smashed to make identification difficult.
The rape and the murder had been committed at the site, the police said.
Given the area is a high security zone, Congress workers and the locals have begun protests outside Gupta’s bungalow, demanding that the minister be sacked.
The man arrested for the crime, Nandkishore Tamoli, 50, is the child’s distant relative. Tamoli had kidnapped the girl from a fair ground, her four-year-old brother has said.
He was accompanying her at the time. But though Tamoli has admitted to the murder, he denies the rape charge. Forensic evidence, however, indicates that he had indeed raped the girl, the police said.
“Bloodstains were found on the clothes of the accused and on his nails,” said a release issued by the police on Wednesday.
“There were injuries on his body. And during medical examination, blood was found on his private parts too.”
Tamoli, a sanitation worker, lives in a slum located near the scene of crime.
A syringe was found on the spot and the police are not ruling out the possibility of the man being a drug-addict.
A special investigation team was constituted to solve the case, and a cash reward of Rs.1 lakh was announced for information on the killer.
