A dozen young people are charged with assaulting the women crew of an orchestra group after hurling obscene remarks at it during a wedding party here on Wednesday night.
One of the victims, who is from Uttaranchal, told the police that the group had come from Zirakpur. "We were in a vehicle, ready to move out when some young men blocked our path and misbehaved with a woman in our crew." she said in her report. "When driver of our car resisted, they manhandled him, and smashed the carglasses with stones."

One of the stones hit the complainant in the eye. Sensing danger, the crew moved the car out and drove to Chandigarh, and where the injured member reported at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) for treatment.

Senior superintendent of police Varinder Pal Singh has confirmed sending a team to Chandigarh to record the statement of the victims. Suspects Nitin, Awtr, Rahul and Sajjan are identified, and along with eight other people, they face charges registered under Sections 354 (criminal force to outrage modesty), 294 (obscene acts, remarks, and songs), 323 (punishment for cauging hurt voluntarily), 324 (causing injuries by dangerous weapons), 325 (punishment for causing grievous injury), 427 (mischief causing small damage), 148 (armed riot), and 149 (unlawful assembly with common object) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
