The panel was formed by party president Sonia Gandhi in November last year after the conclave at Surajkund to prepare for the Lok Sabha elections 2014. Along with the election co-ordination panel, the party president had formed three more committees to deliberate on pre-poll alliances, manifesto and government programmes and communication and publicity.
The election coordination panel—the apex committee to oversee the preparations for the 2014 election—is the only panel among the four where Rahul Gandhi had been made a member. After his formal elevation this will be Gandhi’s first formal meeting at the party’s war room at 15, Gurdwara Rakabganj Road. Last week, Gandhi held three meetings with office bearers to chalk out the future road map for the organisation
In an earlier interaction, Rahul had asked his party leaders to focus on the direct benefit transfer scheme as a key plank for the next poll and hailed it as gamechanger.
