Popular singer Mika Singh was arrested by the Customs department at the Mumbai airport in the early hours of Thursday for carrying cash beyond permissible limit.

The officials found Singh —who was coming from Bangkok — carrying Rs. 3 lakh and $12,000 (equivalent to Rs. 6.36 lakh). One has to declare cash in Indian currency beyond Rs. 7,500 and in foreign currency $3,000.

Singh was also carrying two bottles of liquor and some branded items which he had failed to declare as well.

Officials said he was stopped after he had almost walked out following immigration and customs checks.

Singh was stopped while he was walking through the green channel. Only passengers who do not have anything to declare can walk through the green channel.

Singh was finally released on bail at 3am. He has been booked under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and for smuggling under the Customs Act. Singh told officials that he was not aware that he had to declare currency and goods.
