Families of the martyrs of Parliament attack described the hanging of Afzal Guru on Saturday as 'the real tribute' to the sacrifices laid down to protect India's sovereignty.
"We waited long for this day. It is the real tribute to martyrdom of my husband," said Somoti Devi, 55,
wife of Ghanshyam Singh — a Delhi Police constable who died fighting the terrorists at Parliament on December 13.
A resident of Kosi in Mathura, Somoti Devi along with the families of several other victims of the attack reached Delhi on Saturday afternoon.
The families claim their life has never been easy after the attack.
Though they still nurse a grudge against the government for not delivering on its promises of compensation and other facilities, they are happy that the government hanged the "mastermind" of the attack.
"My life has been a struggle as I was not provided the promised job or the compensation by the government. But I have nothing to complain about now, as they have finally hanged Afzal Guru. I got a job recently and hope no one has to go through the trauma that I faced," said Sunita Devi, widow of ANI cameraman Vikram Bisht, who died while covering the attack.
Sunita works with a local Hindi news channel and her two children - Naveen, 13, and Priya, 12, go to a nearby school in Vaishali, Ghaziabad.
As the news of Afzal Guru's hanging spread, MS Bitta, chairman of All India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF), coordinated with families of the victim and brought them to his house at Talkatora Road.
"My husband, a sub-Inspector with Delhi Police lost his life but saved the temple of democracy. We all are happy that guilty was punished," said Ganga Devi, wife of Nanak Chand, who had come from Sonepat, Haryana to meet the family members of other martyrs.
Bitta said the families will now take back the bravery medals they had returned to the government in protest.
"For the past 12 years we are like a family. We had returned the medals after the government failed to hang Guru. Today, we have decided to take back those medals," said Bitta. He said that he will seek time from the President.
