New Delhi, February 11, 2013
Fortunately or unfortunately, Akshay Kumar has set the bar really high with his recent film releases. So much so that his latest film Special 26, despite earning more than Rs. 25 crore over the weekend, has scored relatively lesser than his earlier films Rowdy Rathore and Khiladi 786.

According to Bollywood Hungama's figures, Special Chabbis collected approximately Rs. 26.5 cr to 27 cr net in its opening weekend.

The Akshay Kumar-Anupam Kher starrer has reportedly witnessed great growth after a tepid start. The film's business grew substantially on Saturday and Sunday and is currently rocking at multiplexes.

Special 26Breakup:
The film earned Rs. 7 crore on Friday, and picked up eventually earning approximately Rs. 9 crore on Saturday, and around Rs. 10.5 to 11 crore on Sunday.

While not bad for an opening, Special Chabbis paled in comparison with Akshay Kumar's last two releases. According to Bollywood Hungama and KoiMoi.com, Rowdy Rathore (2011) got the biggest non-holiday opening weekend ever and collects a colossal Rs. 48.3 cr + nett in its first 3 days and Khiladi 786 collected over 33 crores approx over the first weekend.

Anupama Chopra's review: Special 26
Special 26 is the best Hindi film I’ve seen this year. Inspired by a real-life heist in 1987, writer-director Neeraj Pandey constructs an elaborate cat-and-mouse chase between cops and robbers. Except, here, you’re rooting for the bad guys. HT REVIEW

Special 26 promotions made Anupam Kher skip Golden Globe Awards
Anupam Kher gave up the chance to be present at the 70th Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles on January 13 for the sake of promoting his new Hindi release Special 26. It certainly wasn't an easy decision to make for Kher as David O Russell, the director of the multi-nominated film Silver Linings Playbook, kept insisting that Anupam join the team in L.A for the awards. MORE

Akshay Kumar 'inspired' by Natwarlal
It’s well-known that Akshay Kumar’s Special 26 is based on a real-life 1987 heist. Also, it’s interesting that Akshay plays Ajay Singh — a take on Mon Singh (the name used by an unknown man posing as a CBI officer during the heist) — the leader of the 26-men team. But now, we have heard that his character sketch will borrow elements from India’s notorious conman Mithilesh Kumar Srivastava, better known as Natwarlal. INSPIRED
