A city court has rejected the bail plea of woman inspector Balwinder Kaur in the Shivali suicide case. Additional sessions judge Gurjant Singh rejected the bail plea on the basis of prima facie evidence, which suggested that the inspector subject Shivali to public harassment. This led the girl to commit suicide.

On Friday, the court had granted bail to a photojournalist of a vernacular daily, Brijesh Kumar, and the cameraman of local TV channel, Ravi Kumar.

On August 30, 2012, Shivali (19), a student of local PCM SD College, ended her life after she was seen travelling with a boy in a car. She feared the ire of parents and did not want her photos to be clicked.

She was later quizzed by inspector Balwinder Kaur, in the presence of mediapersons some of whom clicked her photgraphs.

"The child thought that there was no way to prevent her pictures from being published in the next day's paper," asserted IGP Deo in her inquiry report.
