Brightly coloured fur, retro cuts and leather brought sunshine to the catwalk on the stormy Day 5 of the ongoing fashion week in New York.

Designer Marc Jacobs’ collection showcased retro cut outfits in geometric or floral prints, mini dresses and trousers cut above the ankles for the ladies, with boldly shaded silk wool satin suits for the men. Earlier Monday, Carolina Herrera showed why at 74 she’s still on top of her game.

Her collection, Capriccio for Carolina, opened to the sound of Beethoven’s sonata for piano and violin. Shoulders were slightly lifted, silk dresses fell to the floor, and fur was everywhere: on belts, sleeves, coats, and dresses, in brown, green or red. “I was inspired especially by this piece of music. That’s why everything at the beginning was very light and then it is going into a crescendo,” said Herrera.

Designer Phillip Lim sent models onto the runway in head-to-toe leather, creating a decidedly urban silhouette. Black and cognac dominated the colour palette. Short skirts and biker jackets are also a must for the Lim woman. Zac Posen, a favourite of Hollywood A-listers, indulged in his bent for sculptural, red-carpet-ready dresses.

The collection was aimed at the “unconventional woman who enjoys and flourishes in the codes, the historical codes of luxury,” he said. It is the start of a month-long style marathon, with shows in London, Milan and Paris to follow.
