Separatist JKLF leader Yasin Malik might have raked a major controversy over sharing dais with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) leader and 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Muhammad Saeed recently, in 2006 it was the Indian government that allowed him to visit Pakistan to garner support of militant leaders like Saeed for Indo-Pakistan peace process.

On September 8, 2011, HT was the first newspaper to disclose a WikiLeaks report inferring that Malik had Indian and Pakistani governments' backing to push for a ceasefire from the United Jehad Council, a conglomerate of PoK militant groups.

In 2006, Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf had proposed a four-point formula, which was acceptable to India with some amendments. Before embarking on the back channel talks, both the countries wanted militant groups' support.

"Although details varied, most accounts agreed on the basic message: time had come for militants to stop violence to allow space for Musharraf and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to move forward with peace initiatives," said the 2011 cable.

It said Malik told the US that he used his March-April 2006 visit to Pakistan to reach out to Kashmiri militant leaders, counseling them to lay down arms.

Apart from eight cases in J&K, Malik faces charges for his alleged role in kidnap of former minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed's daughter Rubaiya Sayeed.
