Fulfilling its promise of providing affordable power, Tata Power Company has been holding special camps to reach out to residential consumers who use up to 300 units a month and are willing to change their supplier.
The move comes in the wake of the suo motu meeting held by the
Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) last month, where the consumers voiced the difficulties faced by them in changing their existing power supplier such as Reliance Infrastructure or Mahavitaran.
Though the Tata Power has its consumer base across the city, residential consumers contribute to only 10 per cent of its network. Ninety per cent of its consumers are high-end with large consumption such as the railways, refineries, large housing and commercial complexes and multiplexes.
In the first phase that ended last week, the TPC received more than 3,160 applications. As part of the second phase, 76 camps will be held in suburban locations such as Andheri, Jogeshwari, Sion, Kurla, Mira Road, Bhayandar, Dahisar and Kandivli till February 17.
Anil Sardana, managing director, Tata Power, said, “It is our constant endeavour to expand our residential customer base in Mumbai. Through these camps, we plan to reach out to customers and facilitate the switch-over.”
Currently, four companies – Reliance Infrastructure, BrihanMumbai Electric Supply and Transport, Tata Power and Mahavitaran – provide power to the city.
Consumers from the island city cannot change their supply owing to a legal tussle between Tata and BEST.
