In a complaint to inspector general of police (Jalandhar zone), Paswan said that his son Ashok was working as a mechanic at a generator repair shop on Railway Road, Phagwara. He said Ashok had a dispute with Mukesh and the two had a fight.
Paswan alleged that his sons Ashok and Parmod were detained by Phagwara police and kept in illegal custody for seven days, during which they were tortured by SHO Chahal. He said cops released his son Parmod on December 11, 2010 and after about 2 hours Ashok also reached home and started vomiting blood. Paswan said Ashok had told him that besides being beaten, he had been administered poison by the cops. Ashok died at SGL Hospital, Jalandhar, after a few days.
He alleged that police prepared a false report that Ashok had committed suicide due to poverty. He urged the IG to probe the matter and punish the guilty cops.
Speaking with HT, former SHO Chahal refuted the allegations, saying the complaint was false. He said that inquiries conducted by then SP Kamaljeet Singh Dhillon and DSP Sandeep Sharma had given clean chit to him. A writ filed by Paswan in the Punjab and Haryana high court had also been disposed of, Chahal said.
