Police said Praniti had left Pali Hill with her chauffer and bodyguard in her Honda CR-V and was headed for Worli. As her vehicle was crossing Lilavati Hospital around 11.10pm, she spotted a grey Pajero that looked like the one recently stolen from outside her sister’s house.
“She checked the registration number of the vehicle and found it was in fact her sister’s vehicle,” said inspector Uttam Sawant from Bandra police station. She then told the driver to follow the SUV. After following for a few metres, her driver overtook the Pajero and the bodyguard knocked on the windows of the Pajero. “There were two people inside,” Sawant said.
The men realising that their theft had been caught out, reversed the vehicle and sped. Praniti then informed the police controls about the car and began to chase the fleeing Pajero. Spotting a police patrolling van nearby, she alerted them and soon the registration number of the stolen vehicle was flashed across wireless vehicles and toll nakas.
Praniti and the police team finally found the car at the Lalmati slums in Bandra (West). The occupants had, however, vanished. The car has been handed over to the NM Joshi Marg police, where a case of theft had been registered. The police are trying to trace the accused. Senior inspector of NM Joshi Marg police station S Ghagare said the accused had not changed the registration number of the stolen vehicle.
