Taking a strict note of a brawl between two groups on the Chandigarh Golf Club premises, its management on Sunday suspended three members -Congress MLA Randeep Singh Nabha, former captain of golf course SS Laihal and Lt Col Vijay Singh Sandhu (retd) - for their alleged involved in the
Terming the incident “unfortunate”, golf course captain Bobby Sandhu said that all three have been suspended and an inquiry marked into the incident. “Such behaviour is unacceptable,” Bobby Sandhu asserted.
Ugly scenes were witnessed at the club on Saturday when Nabha, flying Sikh Milkha Singh, former Punjab chief secretary RS Mann and SS Laihal were playing in a group and allegedly entered into a confrontation with another group comprising Lt Col Vijay Singh Sandhu (retd), lawyer Harmanjit Sethi and Ajay Kanwar.
According to the police, both the group had heated arguments, after which Nabha and Lt Col Sandhu allegedly attacked each other with clubs. Sandhu sustained injuries near his right eye, left hand and leg while Nabha sustained injuries on his head, leg and back. It was learnt that four-five golf clubs used in the fight were broken.
Both the groups later lodged complaints against each other. On the complaint of Lt Col Sandhu, a case under Sections 323, 506 and 34 of IPC was registered against the Congress MLA, Laihal and Milkha Singh. On the basis of counter-complaint filed by Randeep Singh Nabha, Lt Col Sandhu was booked on similar charges.
“This is an ungentlemanly behaviour on part of all those involved. It should be condemned," remarked Mandeep Singh Bajwa, defence expert and a member of golf club.
UT SSP Naunihal Singh said that the police were looking into the matter and appropriate action would be taken against those found guilty in the probe.
Despite repeated attempts, Congress MLA Randeep Singh Nabha and Lt Col Vijay Singh Sandhu (retd) could not be contacted for comments.
Flying Sikh denies involvement in brawl
A day after the brawl on the Chandigarh Golf Club premises, flying Sikh Milkha Singh on Sunday rubbished reports on his involvement in the unsavoury incident. Though he admitted that he was playing in the group of Congress MLA Randeep Singh Nabha, he denied he was involved in the brawl.
Recounting the incident, the 77-year-old athletics legend claimed that it was Lt Col Vijay Singh Sandhu (retd) who entered into an argument with Nabha over the issue of giving pass while they were playing.
Milkha Singh claimed that after Sandhu threatened Nabha, a verbal duel ensued that later took the form of physical showdown. He further claimed that both attacked each other with clubs, asserting that at no point of time did he or former Punjab chief secretary RS Mann participated in the brawl. “In fact, we both tried to persuade Nabha and Lt Col Sandhu to stop as such unruly behaviour is against the spirit of the game of golf,” remarked Milkha Singh, adding that he was taken aback after he came to know that his name had been included in the FIR.
Supporting Milkha Singh, Bobby Sandhu said, “Milkha Singh is highly acclaimed individual. I am sure he was not involved in the incident.”
