This category has a lot of films with a number of nominations. However, some of the stronger contenders are biopic Lincoln (12 nominations), visually appealing Life of Pi (11 nominations) and even the Robert DeNiro-starrer Silver Linings Playbook (8 nominations)

Actor in leading role
Critics called Daniel Day-Lewis the backbone of Lincoln for his portrayal of the assasinated US president. Hugh Jackman, too, was critically acclaimed for his resentful and rebellious character in Les Misérables.

Actress in leading role
Jessica Chastain has been widely praised for her role of Maya, a key officer in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty. The other two notable nominees in this category are the 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis in Beasts of the Southern Wild and the 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva in Amour.
