In October 2012, the Supreme Court had cancelled the Phase 3 project of RGCTP. For the project, the administration had acquired 272 acres from nearly 200 farmers - of them 35 had taken a compensation of Rs. 5 crore.
The administration had to pay nearly Rs. 75 crore to the farmers and, as per rules, the amount was deposited in the court. Of this amount, Rs. 5 crore has been paid.
After the project was cancelled, 15 farmers had approached the administration. They had requested ut to keep their share of land as they did not have the financial resources to pay the money back.
A majority of the acquired land of such farmers has already been encroached upon and the administration has failed to get it vacated. The UT administration has also decided to seek legal opinion on the possibility of taking the possession of land belonging to such farmers.
