A number of workers and trade union leaders staged dharnas near Mahaveer Chowk. “The administration and police had made elaborate arrangements, but thankfully no rioting was reported,” said a district administration spokesperson.
The city’s IT and BPO sector remained largely unaffected, barring some employees failing to join work. “During any such wide-scale bandhs, around 10-15% employees fail to turn up,” said Pradeep Yadav of Haryana Information Technology and Telecom-Enabled Industries Confederation (HITEC).
A manager with a BPO said, “In some sensitive pockets of the NCR, it was difficult to send cabs to pick up employees. But most of them took the Metro.” The city’s SME industry also remained largely unaffected.
The factory managements at the automobile units had themselves called for halting of production for a day. “To compensate for this, we shall have an additional work day at a future date,” a Hero MotoCorp spokesperson had said on Wednesday.
