A 34-year-old woman and her five-year-old daughter were found murdered at their northwest Delhi house on Thursday afternoon, police said.

While Yasmin's throat had been slit and her body was partially burnt by the assailant(s), her daughter Sophia was found strangled to death at their C block residence located in Rohini's Sector 1 near Vijay Vihar around 2:15pm.

"The bodies were discovered by Yasmin's husband Aslam, who is a plumber and also assists a local property dealer, when he went home to check on his family after his neighbour informed him about smoke emanating from it," said an officer.

Aslam informed the police control room which sent a team to the spot. The door was broken down and Yasmin's semi-burnt body was seen on the floor while Sophia's was found on the bed.

The bodies were rushed to a hospital where they have been preserved for a post-mortem examination.

"Initial investigation revealed that entry into the house was friendly due to which Yasmin's family members, relatives and neighbours are being questioned. A local carpenter, whom we suspect might be behind the incident, has been detained for questioning," the officer added.

Sources identified the detainee as Nadeem, who hails from the same village as Aslam in UP's Badyun district and used to stay with the family as a tenant till six months ago.
