As part of a month-long campaign, first-year management students of Chetana College, Bandra, are learning management values from Mahatma Gandhi’s writings.
“We have always known him as the Father of the Nation, but his teachings have so many management values, particularly in the
way he brought the nation together to fight for Independence,” said Prashant Mishra, 21, a member of the group.
The students began the project, on January 30, Gandhi’s 65th death anniversary, with a mission to sell about 20,000 copies of books about him, in association with the Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal.
“In the process of creating awareness on Gandhi's teachings to the public, the students are imbibing his values on ethics and principles," said professor Aparna Rao, who introduced the project three years ago with help from the college’s management.
“The exercise also helps them look at management as an integrated subject, where they not only have to deal with marketing but also planning and logistics,” she added
Employees of a Jogeshwari-based company where the students had set up a stall were upbeat about the initiative.
“As managers, we have always been inspired by the Mahatma’s teachings, and it is good to see that he is becoming relevant to the younger generation,” said Ashwin Shroff, chairman and managing director of the company, who bought six autobiographies to give to his family members and domestic staff .
The concept of introducing Gandhi’s teachings to management students was put forth by management professor and Gandhian T Prasad a few years ago.
“We found that many students were not aware of Gandhi’s life, which is why I decided to introduce his teachings to management students through which they can learn the values of ethics and leadership,” said Prasad, who introduced the concept in several colleges in the city, including the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Powai, and Chetana College.
