Relating to monks and nuns were values: Paucity, celibacy and obedience. But, today, we ought to adopt a different approach to modern spiritual values which could be thought of as being simple.
Few of us need to join ashrams these days for spiritual progress, as people are seeking
not to metamorphose completely but to balance mundane and spiritual progress. That is why spiritual leaders are showing us how to enhance the spiritual component in our lifestyle and relationships.
Simplicity is "being without affectation". Affectation means that you pretend to be something that does not reflect who you really are. An affected person may talk with an exaggerated accent, or dress in unsuitable ways, or act in a peculiar fashion.
Moderation is successful when you are automatically more attracted to matters of spirit and when you can redirect your impulses, rather than hiding them from friends, guru, deity, and from yourself. Rather than torment yourself with a sense of failure, find out where your energy wants to go.
If you think His will is different from yours, you make the spiritual path so narrow that you are bound to fail. Because of your deep commitment you will surely get into a pit of confusion.
How does this happen? By thinking that the path is a matter of stern, horrible obedience, instead of knowing that He and you are on the same wavelength working in tandem for your highest welfare. When He and you cooperate, the progress toward befriending Him speeds up.
