Murtaza Hotelwala, 40, a Dawoodi Bohra Muslim, has planted several saplings in his Grant Road home in honour of their spiritual leader Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, who will turn 102 on Saturday.
The community has embarked upon a green initiative to add 80,000 trees around
“On Thursday, we will plant 102 trees at Rani Bagh zoo in Byculla to honour the Syedna for his 102nd birthday," said Mohammad Haidermota, chief coordinator of the green campaign.
Over the last 40 days, community members have also been participating in several workshops in the run-up to the 102nd birth anniversary of their leader, and about 15,000 Dawoodi Bohras in the city have registered for Quran recitation workshops at local community centres.
“While there was little participation last year, the response has been extremely good this year,” said Zohair Harnesswala, media spokesperson from Pune, where the 18,000 strong community is also celebrating Syedna’s birthday.
The Syedna, who had brought in his 101st birthday in Surat last year, will be in the city this time, will offer prayers at Raudat Tahera, the mausoleum of the 51st Dai Syedna Taher Saifuddin on Friday.
On Saturday, the Syedna’s son and heir-apparent Maulayi Muffadal Bhaisaheb Saifuddin will deliver a discourse that will be witnessed by Dawoodi Bohras worldwide.
The Syedna will complete fifty years as the Dai al-Mutlaq of the community.
