Embellishments and jewel tonesRich colours took to the ramp in abundance this season. Adding sparkle to them were embellishments, mostly in gold and silver. It’s a pairing you can use in just about any item of clothing or accessory. Spotted at Marchesa, Oscar de la Renta and Zac Posen. Olivia Munn (left) just wore this gown to the Oscars, fresh off-the-ramp.
PeplumsYes, they’ve been around for ages now and have been fashioned at practically every event. But there’s no reason you can’t modify, reinvent or play around with peplums. It’s not too late to invest in tops, dresses or skirts that come with a flattering flare at the waist.
Bejewelled necklinesThis is one trend Indians are sure to love. Gowns and dresses not your style? Replicate the ornate neckline on your salwar-kameez or sari blouse. Spotted at Ralph Lauren and Monique Lhuillier. (Left) Actor Salma Hayek embodied the trend at the recent Oscars.
Big on blackBlack never went out of style, but it’s a rage now more than ever. Indian designers Falguni and Shane Peacock showed a predominantly black collection on the ramp in New York with make-up, nails etc. If the outfit wasn’t black, the detailing on it was. J Mendel was big on leather, while Michael Kors used the colour to reinforce another trend that was on its way out — the high-low hemline.
MonochromeSticking to one colour is the biggest trend that’s emerged this season — be it print-on-print, solids-with-prints or just solids in different shades of the same colour. Clearly, too much matching isn’t considered a faux pas if executed well. Spotted at Anna Sui, Alexandre Herchcovitch and Diane Von Furstenberg.
