Bahl said the solid waste of hospitals, if thrown in garbage dumps, could cause irreparable harm to human as well as animal life. "Needles, syringes, empty bottles, cotton and bandages thrown by hospitals in the open carry germs of contagious diseases and spread environmental pollution," he said.
He asked the hospital authorities to send their waste to the medical waste treatment plant at Pangoli in Pathankot district. Indian Medical Association Gurdaspur unit president Dr Ashok Oberoi and district health officer Dr Balwinder Singh Bajwa also addressed the meeting.
Talking to mediapersons, Bahl said about 40 hospitals in the district were violating PPCB guidelines regarding disposal of biomedical waste and the PPCB had taken action against 16 of them. He said all hospitals were supposed to dispose of their biomedical waste within 48 hours.
