Despite his humiliating defeat in Rejinagar by-elections, Trinamool Congress candidate Humayun Kabir said he was directed to continue with his dual responsibilities as party leader and minister after meeting chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Writers' Buildings on Friday
Despite informing HT of his decision to resign in the next day or two, in the morning before setting out for Kolkata, Kabir, minister of state (MoS) for animal husbandry, managed not to let his ministerial berth slip out of his finger for the time being.
"According to the norms I can't remain a minister because I am no more an MLA. Today I am going to Kolkata to meet my party supremo and the chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, to take her opinion in this issue. If I get her consent I will submit my resignation from the post of minister within a day or two. But I will not submit my resignation from the post of minister until I get the order from the chief minister," he had said.
However, Mamata gave no confirmation of Kabir's statement while leaving the state secretariat on Friday evening. Technically, Kabir can continue as a state minister till May 19.
Earlier, Kabir attacked district Trinamool leadership, alleging that their non-cooperation led to his humiliating defeat.
Although the party's state leadership has been supportive of him, he claims, he did not receive the same support at the district level.
"Barring leaders like the district present and the district secretary, there was not much active support from other Trinamool leaders in my campaign programme," said Kabir, at his ministerial chambers at Writers' Buildings on Friday.
"If he has an complaint he can place it in front of the high command who will take necessary action," said Trinamool secretary general and state commerce and industries minister Partha Chatterjee.
After being denied an appointment with the chief minister on Friday afternoon, Kabir walked straight to his ministerial chamber and aired his grief against the district Trinamool leadership. He met Mamata later in the evening following which he announced his decision to retain his berth.
