The sobriquet of “goonda raj” came back to haunt the Samajwadi Party government, with the alleged involvement of food and civil supplies minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya in the murder of Zia-ul-Haq, a state police service officer in Kunda, about 170 km from the state capital.

In the face of tremendous pressure — BSP chief Mayawati’s call for President’s Rule included — chief minister Akhilesh Yadav was forced to get Singh to resign and request a CBI probe into the murder.

Police named Singh in the FIR on the killing of deputy superintendent of police Haq on Saturday in Kunda’s Balipur village, accusing the minister of conspiracy.

Haq’s wife Parveen Azad said her husband had been under threat ever since he had been posted in Kunda. On Monday, during the CM’s visit, she told him nothing short of Singh’s arrest would satisfy her.

Haq being one of the few Muslim officers in the police force, the government came under considerable pressure from Muslim leaders too.

In the assembly, the opposition demanded Yadav’s resignation. “I am not scared. I will go to jail straight from here if I cause any embarrassment to the government,” Singh later said.
