Nine bonded child labourers, aged between 8 and 12 years (all from Bihar), were rescued from a bangle factory in Lakadandi area of Old City on Sunday.
The rescued children said their heads were shaved off when they failed to satisfy their master with their work. While some had been
brought to the factory just a few months back, others had been confined in the factory for about a year.
For Abhi, 8, a native of Bihar, life has been a nightmare for months now. Long hours of work in unfavourable conditions, poor diet and a beating for every petty mistake sum up his woes.
A swollen face and scars on his body were easily visible when a team of cops along with the anti-human trafficking cell rescued him along with eight others in Saadatganj on Sunday.
Nine bonded child labourers aged between 8 and 12 years -- all from Bihar -- were confined in a bangle factory in Lakadandi area of Old City from where they were freed.
They were shifted to the Rajkiya Bal Grih Balak (government shelter home for boys) on Mohan Road.
Manoj, a volun teer of Childline, who escorted the children to the shelter home, said: “The children were scared. They feared uttering anything against their masters, who not just made them work under inhuman conditions but also tortured them.”
The rescued children said that their heads were shaved off when they failed to satisfy their master with their work. While some had been brought to the factory just a few months back, the others had been confined in the factory for about a year.
“We would stay hungry all the time and would bear the torture each day. Work was not the lone torture. The masters would beat us badly and threaten us all the time,” said a victim.
The police arrested Anwari, wife of one Parvez, in whose factory the children lived and worked. She too is a native of Bihar and brought the children from the village after promising them a job and good earning.
Cops also confiscated Rs. 5,02,000 from the woman.
The operation was carried out after a resident gave a tip-off to the police. When cops raided the factory, they found that that children had been confined in a place that was locked from outside.
