Curfew was imposed in Tanda town in Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh after clashes between two communities on Monday. The violence erupted late Sunday night following the murder of Hindu Jagran Manch president Rambabu Gupta. Gupta, who had a property dispute with some Muslims, was gunned down by some unidentified men late on Sunday, said state home secretary Kamal Saxena and IG RK Vishwakarma in Lucknow on Monday.

Soon after news of the murder spread, Gupta’s supporters resorted to large-scale arson that continued on Monday.

According to reports, when the body was brought to Gupta’s house after post-mortem, members from the other community started throwing stones, resulting in injuries to several people, including policemen.

When tension mounted, the administration imposed a curfew before the cremation of the body. Saxena said Rapid Action Force was rushed from Allahabad and there was additional force mobilisation from Barabanki, Basti and Faizabad.
