A 27-year-old MD student at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday morning in her hostel room inside the hospital campus. The woman was reportedly depressed over her marriage falling apart. She was married in 2010. The first-year post-graduate student of pharmacology department killed herself by consuming poison in hostel number 9/67 of AIIMS. Her body was discovered around 9.30am. An SDM-level enquiry has been ordered into this.

A resident doctor had repeatedly called Keerti Ghakhar, who is from Bhiwani in Haryana, on her phone in the morning but there was no response.

“The doctor then went to her room along with a woman security guard and found it bolted from inside. They knocked on the door several times and informed the hostel authorities when there was no response,” said a senior police officer. The door was broken down and her body was found on the bed.

She was rushed to the hospital casualty, where she could not be resuscitated. She was declared dead around 9.55am.

The investigating officer said, “We found a suicide note from her possession in which she mentioned that no one was responsible for her extreme step. She had apologised to her parents for taking the extreme step and requested them to remain happy.”

Sources in the hospital said the woman was undergoing treatment for depression. “She was going through a rough divorce and the case’s final hearing was slated for a day after. She was under a lot of stress,” said a source.
