Seemingly unmoved by frequent fire mishaps in the city, the municipal corporation is in no hurry to ensure that commercial establishments here are taking all fire-safety measures.
In line with Kipps Market in Sarabha Nagar, and almost all MC offices, the shops from Bharat Nagar Chowk to Inter-state Bus Terminus also do not possess fire safety certificates.

The fact was revealed in an RTI reply to an application filed by Karandeep Singh Kairon, president, National RTI Activists' Forum.

In his application dated February 13, Kairon had requested MC's fire wing for copies of the fire-safety certificates provided to furniture shops from Bharat Nagar Chowk to Inter-state Bus Terminus.

However, the MC reply stated that no fire-safety certificate had been issued to any shop in the area.

The market houses furniture shops, which stock up wood and other flammable material. Absence of fire-safety certificates means, these shops may not have fire-safety measures in place, which is an open invitation to tragedy.

Earlier, it had come to light that most of the major government offices in the city are not abiding by fire-safety norms. Despite the fact that thousands of people visit these buildings throughout the day, the MC is yet to wake up.
