Acting tough on the sanitation bylaws offenders, the  municipal corporation of Chandigarh on Tuesday filed complaints in the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) against 25 offenders who have failed to pay fine by compounding their challans in the office of medical officer of health within the stipulated period.

The complaints have been filed under Section 400 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 976, as extended to Chandigarh, read with Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (Sanitation and Public Health) Bylaws, 1999, prescribing a maximum punishment up to six months
imprisonment.

Additional commissioner-1 Sunil Bhatia said it was the responsibility of all residents to ensure that their garbage was deposited in the garbage bins and nowhere else.

Even if a resident has employed somebody else to dispose of the garbage/malba, it is the responsibility of the resident to ensure that it is deposited at the proper place. Depositing the garbage near the garbage bins outside is also an offence. It has been observed that the large institutional areas like government offices, hotels and institutes dump their garbage outside their boundary wall. They are cautioned that their garbage should be deposited in the garbage bin and horticulture waste near the garbage bin, he said.

 The sanitation committee of the corporation has recommended hiring of 10 additional sanitary inspectors so that those throwing garbage at unauthorised places at night can also be issued challans by carrying out regular campaigns in this regard.
