James Franco on his film Oz: The Great and Powerful
From playing a supporting role in director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, to headlining movies such as 127 hours and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, actor James Franco has come a long way. His next, Oz: The Great and Powerful, directed by Raimi again, sees him playing the popular Wizard of Oz. Though the character was depicted as the powerful but faceless voice of the wizard in the famous Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz series, this movie explores his origin. The actor talks about his role.
Tell us about your character?
My character, Oscar Diggs, is a pretty good magician, but he feels he hasn’t achieved everything he wants to in life and maybe he’s barking up the wrong tree. He wants to be a world-famous performer. Then along comes a horrible tornado and he’s whisked off to a magical world called Oz.
Why did you want to do this?
I was a fan of the Oz books when I was young. I read all of them. When I got the script, I really liked how they handled my character, Oz, who is sort of the emissary to the Land of Oz and is a bit of a charlatan. I thought that was the perfect combination and really the way to bring Oz to the screen in our age.
How was it working with Sam Raimi again?
This is my fourth film with Sam. I’ve known him for about 10 or 12 years. Sam is great at many things, but I would say the skills that stand out are that he’s a maste
