Amid rising crime against women, corporates in Millennium City have gone the extra mile this Women’s Day. Apart from handing out pepper sprays and sending mailers on safety tips, firms are conducting self-defence training classes too. Adding momentum to the drive, the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) had announced February as  “Women’s Safety Month” across all business process management firms.

“We are extra cautious when it comes to ensuring safety of women employees. We have launched several initiatives, including making available pepper sprays,” said Keshav Murugesh, group chief executive officer of WNS which has a 3,000-strong workforce in Gurgaon. The leading BPO has set up stalls at its Gurgaon and Pune offices to sell pepper spray at subsidized rates.

“Incidents of crime against women ahead of Women’s Day have reinforced our pledge to create a safer working atmosphere for women. In line with industry standards, we have set up a quick response team (QRT) accessible to women employees 24x7,” said Harsh Vinayak, senior vice president of NTT Data Global Services, an international BPO firm.

According to Subinder Khurana, chairman of Nasscom’s Haryana chapter, efforts are being made to create a pan IT-BPO industry QRT. “These QRTs will facilitate faster processing of distress calls by women employees,” he said.

Telecom firm MTS has also come up with a Women MPowered mobile connection plan. The telecom firm has set up a vigilance team to provide free self defense classes to customers opting for this plan.
