Are you in the habit of slapping on foundation on your face every time you notice a zit or blemish? Well, seeking refuge in heavy makeup to make your complexion look flawless only adds to your skin woes. Concealers and foundations are known to block pores, cause zits, spots and premature
wrinkles if used regularly.
So, how about a skin product that camouflages imperfections, and acts as a healing balm? The BB Cream (blemish balm/beauty balm), a product that has taken the international and Indian markets by storm claims to meet all makeup needs, and also repair, replenish your skin. “You can use BB creams as makeup base, sun-screens, foundation or even as moisturisers,” explains Nandita Suri of Levo Spalon.
Charoo Chawla from Blliis Spa adds to the benefit list. “Some of these also possess anti-ageing agents and skin smoothening properties.” While the BB can work for some, like every makeup product, it has to be tested before one can find what suits one’s skin. “Since it’s not as thick as foundation, BB provide less coverage than a liquid foundation. It’s better for the don’t-feel-like-wearing make-up days. But, they have a limited colour range — usually one or two, while liquid foundations tend to have five to 10. Also, be careful of BB cream undertones which tend to be pink instead of yellow and can make you look ashy,” says Nikita Sharma, makeup trainer at The Body Shop. The rise of the BB cream
Having its inventive roots in Germany, the beauty cream rose to popularity in Korea where it was believed to be a luxe product and a favourite of film stars. When it made its way to the European market, the primary hiccup was believed to be the lack of availability of varied shades.
While the lighter options were there, for darker skin tones, the product did not work. Now, with the quick rise of the cream in the past couple of years, there are more hues and colours available. In the Indian market, the BB has become popular, but it still does not have the high-definition resilience to replace the multitude of foundations and makeup base. Although, the simple application process still makes it a makeup saviour. “BB Creams are best applied with your fingers. Simply dot a little bit of the product all over the face, and pat it into the skin only with your fingers,” explains Nikita.
