No financial hurdle can suppress excellence. Meet Sajid Ansari, 15, a small town boy from Ranchi who has been appreciated in person by three Presidents for his innovation, a rice filter machine.
He was awarded the IGNITE 2011 in Ahmedabad in 2011 by former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
He received the seventh National Award for scientific excellence by President Pranab Mukherjee on March 7 in New Delhi this year for exhibiting his rice filter at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Besides, former president Pratibha Patil also appreciated his work at her residence during his last visit to the national capital this March. Interestingly, Sajid’s father, Kalim Ansari is a tailor by profession, and he runs his business on a pavement behind Durga Mandir, Main Road. Despite, facing a financial hurdle, this genius teenager has achieved something most of students of his age can’t imagine.
“I have grown up in a family which faced major financial crisis. Seeing my good academic performance, my school took the decision of teaching me for free till class 12,” said Sajid. However, by his determination and excellence he has earned something money can never buy - words of appreciation from three Presidents. “My interaction with all the three Presidents has taught me a lot,” Sajid said, adding, “My work was appreciated by all of them.
Dr Kalam said I should not be bogged down by the financial crunch and keep working hard to achieve my goals, while Pratibha Patil interacted with me for over two hours.” While being felicitated by President Mukherjee, Sajid learnt how much his invention could benefit the people of India.
“Pranabji told me that my rice filter could be used by many people in rural areas to filter rice at home. The rice filter takes out all the impurities such as pebbles and husk from rice and makes it ready to cook,” narrated Sajid. Sajid is a Class 8 student of Guru Nanak Higher Secondary School, Ranchi, and stays at a lodge in Hindpiri, as his house is at New Pirra, Kathipad, Ratu, is around 15 km from the state capital. His father never compromised with Sajid’s education despite the financial crunch.
“I want him to become a successful man and make us proud. His achievements make me realise that parents should always try to impart the best of education to their children irrespective of their financial status,” said Kalim.
