A day after the Samajwadi Party (SP) government in Uttar Pradesh completed a year in office, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday promised to tighten the screws on police officials to improve the law and order situation in the state even as he claimed that his regime had performed satisfactorily on the development front.

Addressing mediapersons here, Yadav, 39, warned police officers to pull up their socks to tackle crime.

"There will be no compromise on this issue and action will be taken against everybody," he said.

The chief minister also enumerated a series of plans to strengthen policing, including quick police response time, installation of GPS system on all police vehicles, more control rooms and CCTVs to keep tabs on criminals.

"Bad performers would be identified for stern disciplinary action," Yadav said.

"Often, one single incident (of crime) destroys all other achievements of the government," he adding, pointing out that the police would have to improve their behaviour and become corruption-free," he added.

Similarly, the chief minister cautioned the bureaucracy to improve its performance and image. The government would provide opportunities to good officers but tainted ones would not be spared.

On the outbreak of communal violence during the past year, Yadav, however, blamed opposition parties, saying that investigations revealed that in most of the cases rival parties were involved in igniting violence.
