Khap leaders have demanded amendment in Hindu Marriage Act regarding lowering the marriageable age for women. Baljit Malik, pradhan of Gathwala khap, in a press release said that if government thinks, 16 year is the ripe age for girls for consensual-sex, it should not hesitate in making amendment in Hindu Marriage Act regarding lowering  marriageable age of women.

Warning the state government Malik, an advocate, said that khap panchayats would not tolerate this move and and may launch agitation.

Kuldeep Dhanda, convener of Sarv Jatia Sarv Khap Mahapanchayat while raising apprehension on the upcoming anti-rape bill said, "There are chances that the lowering of consent age may attract its misuse, as the law takes one-sided view. If government lowers the consent age for girls, then they must lower the consent age of boys too".

Suggesting measures, he said "Instead of making stalking, staring at girls a non-bailable offence, government must introduce methods to instill morality in citizens, which would establish a crime free society".
