Chidambaram is the first top Congress leader to make this assertion on an issue that has Tamil Nadu on the boil for over the past one week.
Addressing a public function at Sivaganga district, his home town, the Union finance minister said "I am confident India would support if UN resolution sought independent international probe against Sri Lanka.
He hoped that this message would go to the students on protest fasts across the state.
Incidentally, DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi had earlier on Saturday said that there was no response from the centre to his demand for India initiating amendments to US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka to seek an independent international probe against Sri Lanka and punish those responsible for war crimes and genocide against innocent Tamils in the island nation.
