Physicists had announced on Thursday that they believed they had discovered the subatomic particle which will help in explaining what gives electrons and all matter in the universe mass. The scientists at CERN had announced the discovery of a new particle in July last year.
“Current measurements are consistent with it being the Higgs particle of the Standard Model of particle physics, but they are also compatible with a different kind of Higgs.” Heuer added. On how many collisions were done to detect the particle Heuer said, “Higgs production is a rare process, so a lot of collisions were necessary for an unambiguous discovery. Each of the two experiments looked at some 10 to the power 15 collisions”.
