The second quarter in Bollywood (April-June) will see 25 big and small releases with a budget of around Rs.
450 crore riding on them. And trade analysts say that business looks good for tinsel town this year, unlike the last few years which have seen a dip in the
number of big release in this quarter. Last year, this quarter saw 29 film releases, but in the absence of many big-budget films, the total revenue from these films grossed around Rs.
300 crore, with Rowdy Rathore, Housefull 2, Vicky Donor and Ishaqzaade doing well.
The lineup this year, in the second quarter includes many more big-budget films of various genres, including Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout at Wadala, Zanjeer’s remake starring Priyanka Chopra and Ram Charan, Ayan Mukerji’s Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani starring ex-lovers Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan’s Ghanchakkar and Kannan Iyer’s horror film Ek Thi Daayan, among many others.“The variety of films releasing is incredible. With R400-R450 at stake, Bollywood is expected to do great business in the upcoming quarter. It is clear that filmmakers are confident that their films will do well despite the Indian Premier League (IPL6 starts on April 3),” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Agrees film critic Anupama Chopra, “There is something for every kind of audience, from horror films to action and comedy. With so much on offer, it is a win-win situation for everyone including the viewers. It also shows that filmmakers have realised that not everyone wants to watch IPL.” Trade expert Vikas Mohan says, “The first quarter has not been good for the industry. However, with this mix, lets hope the box office will do well. Only films will good content will finally fare well.”
