“The effort made by other districts will go in vain as Mumbai is not cracking down on errant doctors,” said Varsha Deshpande who runs Lek Ladki Abhyaan a non-profit, which has performed numerous sting operations on doctors conducting sex selections.
Campaigning groups have pointed out that so far not a single doctor from Mumbai has been suspended for performing sex selection tests. This despite the fact that the BMC has sealed 48 ultrasound machines in the city in the last two years.
In contrast, other districts in the state that have fewer ultrasound centres have not only sealed clinics violating the PCPNDT Act but have also forwarded their names for suspension.
“I will have to look into the matter to check why doctors caught in sting operations are not suspended,” said BMC’s executive health officer Dr Arun Bamne
“We have received the names recently and have served a show-cause notice to these doctors,” said Dr Kishore Taori, president, MMC.
