Taking action against unauthorised construction, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation demolished or sealed 76 properties in the city this week.

Among the properties that were sealed was a 2000-square yard plot in Narela being developed into a colony of 50 houses. Five other residential buildings in Meera Bagh were sealed after it was found that they were being misused for commercial purposes.

“The building department had recently received some criticism over poor performance so they upped the ante on unauthorised construction and carried out several drives,” said a senior official.

In the Karol Bagh zone, properties were sealed and demolished in Moti Nagar, West Patel Nagar, Mansarovar Garden, Inder Lok and Ajmal Khan Road, Karol Bagh.

In Rohini, action was taken against properties in sector 5 and sector 7, Pitampura and Udyog Nagar. The building department of Narela and City zone also carried out drives and demolished parts of properties that were built without taking permission.

“Some of the properties were still under construction while in some houses; the owners were building an extra floor or room. The building department with the help of the local police demolished the walls, ceilings and extra rooms all over North Delhi,” said an official. In a few cases, residents had built rooms by encroaching on government land.

In a statement, municipal commissioner PK Gupta asked all the deputy commissioners to be more vigilant and not to tolerate any kind of unauthorised constructions.
