He made his own bed, now let him lie on it
With reference to Harinder Baweja’s article He’s got off quite lightly (March 23), it is unfortunate that after actor Sanjay Dutt was awarded a jail term of five years in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case by the Supreme Court on Thursday,
the clamour for his sentence to be commuted has grown louder. Amid allegations that TADA charges were dropped under political influence, the sympathy that politicians and the film fraternity have shown for the actor seems to be quite misplaced. Granting any remission to Dutt, whom the highest court of the land has found guilty of acquiring illegal weapons from those who were waging an open war against the country, will set a wrong precedent. The SC verdict has sent out a clear message that no one’s above law. Now, let Dutt pay for his deeds.

Never a dull moment these days
With reference to the editorial Please mind the gaffe (March 22), it is appalling that our politicians shoot their mouths off every now and then but when they are caught on the wrong foot they either blame the media or excuse themselves by saying that their remarks were quoted out of context. Union minister Beni Prasad Verma was the latest to put his foot in his mouth by accusing SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav of harbouring terrorists. It seems in this day and age of real-time updates our politicians with their gaffes ensure that we never have a dull moment.

Educate consumers on their rights
This refers to Pushpa Girimaji’s article Consumer rights are at a discount (March 21). The government should do its best to curb the menace of unfair trade practices. It should also be tough on the practice of misleading advertisements that are often difficult to prove. For this, it is necessary to raise awareness about consumer rights among people.
