In a retort at CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat for complaining to the President against him, West Bengal governor MK Narayanan on Friday said he preferred it much more than 'using rods'. "In a democratic country, he is free to complain against the President. I fully support that. That is my point. I prefer that rather than using rods. That is what I am trying to protect," Narayanan told reporters.

Karat on Thursday had shot off a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee complaining against Narayanan for terming the attack on chief minister Mamata Banerjee and finance minister Amit Mitra in Delhi on April 9 as premeditated and asking for an apology from the CPI(M) politburo.

The CPI(M) leadership had reacted sharply with CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose contending that the governor was unaware of the functioning of the politburo.

The governor had on Thursday issued a statement and said he had been a student of Communism for over six decades and was well aware of the functioning of the politburo.
